About the Nicole Information Bureau

The Nicole Information Bureau is the information arm of the Nicole Defense Campaign launched by awardees of The Oustanding Women in the Nation’s Service (TOWNS).

The bureau itself was created in June 2006 under the supervision of Dr. June Pagaduan Lopez, former director of the Center for Gender and Women Studies of the University of the Philippines-Manila, freelance editor Paulynn Paredes Sicam, formerly of Cyberdyaryo, and Tess Glinoga, a writer and rape survivor.

Its mission is to:

(1) provide the public with more accurate, more complete, and more sensitive updates of the trial and other helpful information on the Subic Rape Case;

(2) help prepare Filipino society to deal more fairly with victims of rape and sexual assault by educating the public on the psychological and social issues attached to rape;

(3) educate the public on the anatomy of rape as a heinous crime and a clear violation of the rights of women; and

(2) persuade Filipinos to see beyond the superficial and appreciate the social, and political implications of this case.

Apart from maintaining this blog and writing summaries of the trial, the bureau also monitors media reportage (television, radio, print, online) and public opinion on the issue. It also plans to conduct public forums to help raise people’s awareness and understanding of rape in general and Nicole’s case in particular.

The bureau is composed of volunteers, most of whom are students from the University of the Philippines-Diliman.
